On July 19, 2025, Washington Foundation Board Members, Artists-in-Residence participants, friends, supporters, and community members gathered together for the “James W. Washington, Jr.: Many Hats, One Spirit” exhibit opening party at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA).

This major retrospective exhibit includes every phase of Dr. Washington’s career, comprising his painting, poetry, stone sculpture, drawings, prints, and collage work. Ephemera and selections from Dr. and Mrs. Washington’s personal collections are included, culminating in a recreation of Dr. Washington’s studio and Washington's living room with original artifacts.

The exhibit also features 28 former Artists-in-Residence from the Dr. James and Janie Washington Cultural Center in Seattle. These artists pursued diverse media such as stone carving, painting, printmaking, mixed media work, poetry, and writing in Washington’s former studio, home, and garden for selected periods. Some artworks were generated during these residencies, and others reflect more current endeavors.
A series of public programs will complement the exhibit, including:
August 16, 2025: Three Voices, Three Visions: On The Life and Legacy of James W. Washington Jr.
September 7, 2025: The Living Legacy of James W. Washington, Jr.
The exhibit runs through September 17, 2025.
Admission to the museum is free.
