Artist in Residence

The artists who participate in the program should reflect James and Janie Washington’s strong belief in the healing and transcending value of art upon the human spirit. They will live and work in the Washington House and Studio, and through inspiration from the surrounding resources, (archives, library, home, gardens, etc.) bring new artwork to life and interact with the Seattle community.  This interaction may come through mentoring, workshops, or presentations that will endeavor to inspire and add meaning for the participants.

The artist will prepare a final exhibition/ presentation of their work to be shared in a public opening.

Six selected artists per year will be provided with studio access and technical assistance to create works that they might not otherwise be able to.

Education Program

Partner with local K-5 schools: targeted learners are children ages 5-12. This program would take place both offsite and eventually onsite in order to reach students where they are comfortable and where they have easier access and to accommodate for the demands of the school schedules. Once a partnership is formed and classroom learning goals are identified and integrated into the program, then a residency exchange would be designed.

The program would likely include one or more off site session at the schools, on site visit/tour, additional off site, followed by an exhibition of the learner’s artwork at a location that makes sense for the learning community. Preference would be given to schools who are lacking regular visual arts programming in order to ensure that resources are going to those who would not otherwise receive them. Consideration for changing demographics, the museum’s neighboring schools, heritage, and potentially access through community public spaces, like the library, may be relevant.
