Brent Leggs Discusses Washington Cultural Center

Brent Leggs, Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and Senior Vice President, recently discussed the Dr. James & Janie Washington Cultural Center, one of the recipients of the Action Fund’s Descendant and Family Stewardship Initiative grant program.

According to Mr. Leggs:

“The Dr. James & Janie Washington Cultural Center in Seattle’s Central District honors the legacy of two visionaries who built community through art and care. Dr. James Washington Jr., a painter and sculptor shaped by the WPA and the Northwest School, created from the studio behind the home he shared with his wife, Janie, a nurse and partner in building a life rooted in service.

Together, they willed their estate to ensure future generations would experience their work and vision. Through our support, descendants are leading a new stewardship plan for the Center — sustaining its mission and keeping the Washingtons’ legacy alive.”
